El Valor Leadership Program
The El Valor Leadership Program was developed through contractual agreement between the Department of Educational Organization and Leadership (EOL) and the University of Illinois, in cooperation with the Division of Academic Outreach, and the El Valor Corporation of Chicago. El Valor was founded in 1973 by Guadalupe Reyes as a bilingual, bicultural family center. Today El Valor offers a broad variety of family support and educational programs, including vocational training and advanced degree opportunities. El Valor means "courage." The agreement with El Valor provides for only one cohort of students seeking the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree. This University approved program differs from the traditional school administrative preparation program, in that it is not designed to lead to or to provide administrative certification. As stated in the agreement, the El Valor Leadership Program is "intended to prepare students for leadership in a variety of organizational settings." The program, therefore, is designed to feature a broad policy orientation for prospective leaders. This program requires 18 units of course work, six of which must be completed on the Urbana-Champaign campus to meet the University residency requirements.
