Child Well-Being Study
Most child welfare research has focused on children's safety and the stability of their family relationships and living situations. Relatively few studies have investigated the well being of children who are in the foster care system. The studies that exist suggest that these children have more health and mental health difficulties, and that they do less well in school, than other children in their communities. Initiated in February 2001, this 3-year study examines the physical health, mental health and school performance of children who are in the care of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). Three hundred of the approximately 25,000 children in foster care in Illinois will be selected at random each year, and their well being studied via in-depth interviews, health screenings, reviews of records, and other measures. This comprehensive study of an important child welfare issue is led by the Children and Family Research Center and the Office of the DCFS Research Director and involves several Universities and research institutes in Illinois.
