Pet Loss and Grief Helpline
The Companion Animal Related Emotions (C.A.R.E.) Helpline provides a supportive outlet for people experiencing disruptions in, or the loss of, the bond they share with companion animals. The helpline is staffed by veterinary students who understand the importance of this bond and the emotions involved when that bond is threatened or broken. The students receive training by professional grief counselors and receive ongoing supervision by a licensed clinical social worker. Callers may leave a voice mail message anytime: 217-244-CARE or toll free 877-394-2273. Volunteers will return calls on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday between 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. Central time (If scheduling permits, calls may be returned on other evenings during the same hours). There is no charge for this service. A website is available at http://www.cvm.uiuc.edu/CARE/ and the Helpline e-mail address is griefhelp(at)cvm.uiuc.edu.
