Public Service Activities
Envirovet Summer Institutes
This six-week-long educational program, held at White Oak Conservation Center, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, and other locations in the Southeast USA, and at multiple locations in a developing country, is designed for those pursuing careers in aquatic or terrestrial wildlife health, ecological toxicology, and ecosystem health. Sessions involve contact with at least 80 scientists and other environmental specialists from universities, industries, and consulting firms across the USA, Canada, and the developing country involved. Faculty of this intensive program also include individuals from the US EPA, the National Wildlife Health Research Center, major foundations, non-governmental organizations, and international corporations. Classroom exercises, as well as hands-on laboratory and field exercises, stimulate interactions with role models, mentors, and future colleagues from a wide range of backgrounds. The goal of the Envirovet effort is to provide expertise, tools and methods for participants to use in building careers that enable short- and long-range ecological planning that concurrently addresses the needs of wildlife, domestic animal, and human populations.
