Russian and East European Center: Outreach Program
This center serves a wide audience ranging from community groups to academic researchers. The outreach program responds to the needs of precollege social studies and Russian language teachers by providing consultation services and materials throughout the year. College teachers, who are the principal users of the Slavic Reference Service, participate in the annual Summer Research Laboratory. The entire constituency is represented at conferences sponsored by the center. In addition, the outreach coordinator and faculty offer summer curriculum workshops on Russia and sessions at in-service days and professional conferences. The outreach newsletter, Update, a joint publication with the African, East Asian, and Latin American centers, has been distributed to teachers since 1979 (without charge) to about 2000 educators nationally. The U.S. Department of Education funds the center, which has been designated a national resource center.
