Public Service Activities
Regional Economics Applications Laboratory
REAL, a cooperative venture between the university and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, focuses on the development and application of urban and regional economic models. The lab provides the capability for analysis of existing and potential economic activities ranging from airports to new firms, art exhibitions, or the impacts of tourism expenditures. In addition, REAL has developed software that enables policy makers to apply complex regional economic models in a variety of contexts. In Illinois, REAL has performed economic impact analysis and forecasting for the Chicago Economic Development Commission, City Colleges of Chicago, Regional Transportation Authority, Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission, Illinois Department of Transportation, and Illinois Gaming Board. In addition, REAL has developed models for the states of Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio and for the metropolitan areas of Chicago and St. Louis. International activities have focused on several states in Brazil and the Jakarta Metropolitan economy.
