Afro-American Studies and Research Program
The mission of the Afro-American Studies and Research Program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is to expand the University's central mission of teaching, research, and public service to include the experiences, perspectives, and interests of African descended people. AASRP builds on the University's core values of providing an outstanding education by utilizing the most innovative teaching technology and advanced research methodologies, and by proactively engaging the broader society. The Program is committed further to critically examining the experiences of African Americans and black peoples throughout the African Diaspora. We also examine their internal commonalties and diversities, continuities and transformations in their experiences and perspectives over time and across space. The Program's evolving diasporic focus also facilitates an examination of race and racial oppression from cross-disciplinary and Pan-African perspectives. Central to the Program's approach is the exploration of the experiences, contributions, and perspectives of Black women and men across class, nationality, generational, and ideological lines, especially how these social identities recursively influence one another. We are dedicated to helping students develop the creative and critical competencies, including oral and written communication, computer and statistical skills necessary to engage the contemporary concerns of African Americans and African descended people.
