Robert Allerton Park and Visitor Center
Robert Allerton Park, given to the university in 1946 by Robert Allerton (1873-1964), is open to the public from 8 A.M. to dusk. The park is divided into two distinct geographic sections: the floodplain on the Sangamon River and the uplands. Formal gardens and more than 100 sculptures are located near the main house and in the woods and meadows north of the river. A native forest, a 50-acre restored prairie, and the Lost Garden (a wilderness garden) lie to the south. In 1971 the 1,000-acre lowland and southern forests of the 1,517-acre site were designated a National Natural Landmark. Park information is available at the Park Visitor Center or by calling 217-762-2721 or 217-244-1035. The Main Entrance, from the south, will be closed due to bridgework until 2003. All traffic must use the North Entrance. Directions and a map can be found at: http://www.conted.uiuc.edu/allerton/html/directions.html
