Early Outreach: Mayor's Summer Jobs Program
Early Outreach is the coordinating site for UIC's participation in the Mayor's Summer Jobs Program. The primary goals are to prepare youth for entry into the labor force by providing work experiences that are similar to those found in unsubsidized employment and job training experiences in areas where there is an occupational demand. It also provides job training for Early Outreach students who meet program requirements. The number of work sites increased from five prior to 1997 to nine in 1998. The number of participants ranges from 40 - 70. All participants are scheduled to work twenty (20) hours per week at $5.75 per hour. The participants are all minority youth, ranging in age from 14 to 21. Each participant is assigned to a position based on his/her career goals, educational preparation, personal outlook, and previous work experience. They work in the following available positions: educational activities aide, general office clerk, patient aide, supply and inventory storekeeper, and teacher's aide in departments around the campus. Students attend an orientation and job skills training workshops. They also receive close supervision and critiques of their job performance during the course of their employment experience.
