Early Outreach: Hispanic Math/Science Education Initiative

The Hispanic Math/Science Education Initiative is a collaborative program that recruits eighth through twelfth graders and involves the University of Illinois at Chicago's Early Outreach Program, Malcolm X College, Benito Juarez and Roberto Clemente High School, and their feeder elementary schools. The goal of the HMSEI is to increase the number of Latino students who are prepared to enter careers in health and other professions. The program convenes at Malcolm X College on Saturdays from October through May. It provides academic enrichment in math, science, reading, and composition; career awareness activities in the sciences; tutoring; socialization to a college environment; and a forum for parents to share information and concerns through the HMSEI Parent Network. The HMSEI serves 175 students in grades eight through twelve. The twelfth graders from this program participate in the Saturday College High School/College Transition Program.
