Building Your Life
The "Building Your Life" program, developed and directed by Arlisha Kennedy, is a Chicago Public Schools based and community oriented program funded by the Rosenbaum Foundations, Polk Bros. Foundation, and Prince Charitable Trusts. It is directed at preventing early sexual behavior, teenage pregnancy, substance abuse and sexually transmitted diseases, while enhancing communication and decision-making skills. Target groups served by the Building Your Life program include pre-teens, teens, adults/parents, and professional teachers/trainers. The educational program is offered through schools and engages parents, teachers, and school personnel to reinforce the effects of the classroom sessions. The educational strategies employed in the program include scripted role plays, lecture, discussion/"rap" sessions, skills development, and use of media (print and video). The program prepares students for the realities of life by enhancing their ability to make responsible and knowledgeable choices; building a stronger sense of self; assisting in the development of effective communications with parents, peers, and others; and strengthening their ability to resist early sexual activities. Grade appropriate, multi-lesson curricula are presented in schools by experienced, masters prepared health educators in the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Schools agree to participate in the program for a multiple year curricula implementation and program evaluation.
