Gallery 400

Gallery 400, a not-for-profit arts presenter and exhibition space at the University of Illinois at Chicago, was founded in 1983 to exhibit and support innovations in art, design and architecture. Over its 18 year history, Gallery 400 has grown into a nationally recognized alternative gallery that presents consistently acclaimed exhibitions, lectures and artist residencies while continuing to engage multiple communities in its education, collaboration and audience development programs. Drawing on its fertile context in a public educational institution, Gallery 400 supports and presents programming founded on three primary areas: exhibitions, the Voices lecture series and artist residencies. Produced in tandem, Gallery exhibitions, lectures and residencies collectively activate an experimental interchange between artists, viewers and exhibition strategies. As a showcase for challenging, proactive and engaging art and architecture exhibitions, Gallery 400 is essential to academic programs within the College of Architecture and the Arts. Students from the College and from disciplines from across the campus have directed contact with art and artists, the multiple possibilities of exhibition and current discourse in contemporary art, architecture and design.
