Public Service Activities


Institute on Disability and Human Development

The Institute is the research and public service arm of UIC's Department of Disability and Human Development. The primary purpose of the Institute is to conduct research and provide clinical services for persons with physical and mental disabilities and their families. The Institute also provides an extensive array of technical assistance on disability-related issues to businesses, community agencies, and state/federal organizations. Research activities are also extensive. Annual external funding during AY 1999-2000 was $6.7 million. There are 47 grants and 170 staff. The Institute serves as the federally designated "University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research and Public Service" for the State of Illinois, and also serves as the principal technical assistance agent on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for the six-state upper-Midwest region. The ADA technical assistance is provided through the Institute's Great Lakes Disability and Business Technical Assistance Center. The Institute also operates interdisceplinary clinics in rehabilitation engineering/assistive technology and diagnostics/assessment.
