English Composition Program

The English Composition Program at UIC introduces students to the demands of reading and writing at the university. To meet the requirements for graduation, English 160 and 161 must be passed or waived. Students may also be asked to take a preparatory class. English 160 engages students in writing about a particular topic for different audiences and different purposes. English 161 provides a topic-oriented approach to conducting academic research. The course's aim is to guide students in recognizing a research area, formulating a research question or problem, conducting research in the UIC library, and reporting research in the conventional formats and genres of a university community.
