UIContest: General Knowledge Contest for High School Students and Parents
The University of Illinois at Chicago was a major participant in Project Millennium: the City of Chicago’s citywide activities to celebrate the new millennium. UIC hosted several "open house" events, lecture series and other activities in 1999 to highlight the university's contribution to learning and culture. A featured event was the development of a special game-show type contest called UIContest. A unique feature of UIContest is to have teams composed of high school students (in Grades 10 to 12) and their parents/guardians. The contest was successfully held for the first time in April 1998. The aims of the contest are to increase parents' participation in their children's education and academic activities, to introduce talented high school students to UIC...and to have fun! The contest will be held again at UIC on Sunday, November 12, 2000 in the Illinois Room, Chicago Circle Center 750 S. Halsted Street, Chicago. ELIGIBILITY AND PARTICIPATION: Each team will be made up of three high school students from the same school and their parents/guardians. Matches will be played continuously from approximately 9:00am with the final rounds to be held in the afternoon consisting of the eight high school teams not eliminated. CONTEST FORMAT: Participation by parents is a novel aspect of the contest and highlights the important role of parents and guardians in their children's education. Teams are composed of three high school students and their three parents/guardians, all associated with one school. The contest consists of a series of elimination matches between two teams. Each question is won by the player who "buzzes in" first and answers the question correctly. The team which is ahead at the end of 30 questions wins the match. A match will take less than 20 minutes to complete, but several matches may go on simultaneously, depending on the number of teams. Short-answer questions are worth one point each. Every fifth question is more quantitative, requiring some analytical skills, and is worth 2 points. The questions will be drawn from a wide variety of categories including language and literature, science, math, and computers; geography, history, and social science, music and the arts; current events; movies and sports. PRIZES: Students from the top 4 teams will get scholarships to UIC and paid six-week summer internships ($1500) in a research lab at UIC. All team members will receive a gift packet for participating in the UIContest.
