Institute for Public Safety Partnerships

This program is a regional community policing institute funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS). It was created in July of 1997 to develop, deliver, and evaluate new community policing education, training, and technical assistance services using traditional training methods and state-of-the-art distance learning tools. The founding IPSP partners include the Aurora, Bloomingdale, Chicago, Elmhurst, Evanston, Frankfort, and Joliet police departments, the Chicago Alliance for Neighborhood Safety, the Cook County Adult Probation Department, and three local universities -- The University of Illinois-Chicago, Loyola University of Chicago, and Northwestern University. The community policing educational process developed by IPSP is unique in several ways. Its training focuses on building and sustaining effective partnerships for problem solving in communities that involve the police, community organizations, social service and other governmental agencies; recruiting community residents to participate in problem solving efforts; and seriously assessing the outcomes of problem solving and partnership building efforts. IPSP follows education and training with assistance efforts of various kinds. Finally, IPSP will explore ways in which the Internet and other distance learning mechanisms can be used to further its education and assistance efforts. IPSP will provide its training and services to communities in Illinois and the midwest. Organizations involved in community policing or general efforts to form partnerships for public safety and quality of life improvement efforts may contact the Institute and request training or technical assistance.
