Public Service Activities
Survey Research Laboratory
Since 1964, the Survey Research Laboratory (SRL) has provided survey research services to the faculty, staff, and students of the University of Illinois; other academic institutions; local, state, and federal agencies; and others working in the public interest. Since its inception, SRL has been involved in almost 1,000 projects, collecting data through telephone and face-to-face interviews and mail and other self-administered questionnaires. Much of this research has concerned health and health-related behaviors, including smoking cessation, cancer screening and prevention, and substance abuse, although other areas of focus have included aging, crime, education, the environment, housing, and transportation. SRL has offices and telephone interviewing centers on the Chicago and Urbana-Champaign campuses. SRL can undertake complete survey projects from initital study design through data analysis; conduct partial survey work, such as sampling, questionnaire design, focus groups, data collection, and data reduction; and consult on specific survey problems. SRL's services are available on a fee-for-service basis, although SRL does provide a limited amount of free advice regarding survey methodology to University faculty, staff, and students.
