City Design Center

The center is a multi-disciplinary research, education, and service program in the College of Architecture and the Arts at the University of Illinois at Chicago which promotes the study and practice of design in the public interest. The center's work is founded upon the idea that the quality of the built urban environment is intrinsic to the vitality and diversity of the city's cultural, economic, and political life. To meet the challenge, the center develops and advocates for innovative and effective design research by providing: frameworks for cross-disciplinary, integrated design of the built environment, partnerships between UIC design researchers, citizens, and government, dialogues among UIC and local, regional, national, and international design professionals and decision makers. The center's work is accomplished through cross-disciplinary collaborations among faculty and students in architecture and urban design, urban planning, history and culture of cities, public and community art, environmental graphic design, industrial design, historic preservation, and other relevant design disciplines and professions. The center focuses its work in the Chicago region. The center emphasizes applied research and educational programs on design ideas and practices, and prototypic and demonstration projects to explore design innovation in support of its social agenda. Last year the City Design Center launched a three year Affordable Housing Program funded by the Fannie Mae Foundation. The Affordable Housing Program attempts to insure housing affordablility for the surrounding neighborhoods'low and moderate income residents, as well as to facilitate community organizations' and residents' capacities to be leaders in development decisionmaking. The Affordable Housing Program includes the following five projects: 1. Linking Affordable Housing to Community Development 2. From Public Housing to Home Ownership and Economic Opportunity 3. Affordable Housing Design Catalogue 4. Neighborhood Impact Studies 5. The Urban Developers Program
